April 20, 2005
Aloha All, This e-newsletter is being sent to fill you in on the upcoming happenings at Keauhou Canoe Club.
This coming Sunday, April 24, is the Official Weighing of Canoes Day. We will need to have all our canoes unrigged and ready for the Moku O Hawaii weighmasters who will arrive about 11:00 a.m. Of course we'll then have to rerig everything in order to have the canoes ready for practice on Monday.
The votes are coming in on the 2005 design for our official Keauhou Canoe Club membership shirts. We are hoping to finalize this and tally the votes this weekend - we will have the designs available for you to check out on Sunday, especially for those who are unable to vote by e-mail. If you haven't yet made your selection known, send your vote asap - go to http://www.keauhoucanoeclub.com/polls/tshirt/
Please plan on arriving at the Keauhou Canoe Club Halau that morning at 10:00 a.m. for a Halau Clean-up Day, in conjunction with the weighing of canoes. Wear gloves and proper shoes or boots (no rubber slippers) and be ready to tackle some of the jungle that is encroaching on our area. Rather than paddles, chain saws, weed-whackers, clippers, rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, garden carts, etc. will be the tools of the day. We will also be clearing out and cleaning up the equipment and paddle sheds. Anyone with stuff stored in the sheds will be asked to remove it. Locks on the sheds will be changed on Sunday - there are too many keys floating around, and valuable club equipment is in jeopardy. Lunch and cold drinks will be provided to our helpers.
Practice for our Junior Paddlers has begun - for the Special Events kids (under 12) Sheryl Cobb is coaching on Mondays at 4:00 p.m. The boys and girls, age 12 and up, are practicing on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you have, or know of, any young folks who would enjoy this terrific sport that builds character and teamwork, please bring them down to the bay to meet the coaches, Sheryl, Paul, Moke and Jonathan.
On Saturday, June 4, Keauhou Canoe Club will host the Auntie Mary Jane Kahanamoku Heihei - a long distance race for all mixed crews (6 women and 6 men in each canoe) in all sorts of age groups and divisions. Last year we had participants from all over the island. Kona Brewing Co. is a sponsor of the event - they provide the prizes and the adult beverage liquid refreshments for the post race party. We will be asking for club membership help in setting up, preparing and serving the lunch, doing registration and timing this Moku O Hawaii sanctioned event.
The following day, Sunday, June 5, we will be manning an Aid Station for the Honu Half Ironman Triathlon out at the Mauna Lani. This will be a Run Course Aid Station, located somewhere on the Mauna Lani Resort property. Because of our super teamwork, Keauhou is known for the great spirit and performance at these other athletic events. There will be another opportunity to help at an Aid Station two weeks later - the Kona Marathon takes place on Sunday, June 19, and we sponsor an Aid Station on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway out near Costco. Please let Jane know (322-2120) if you can kokua at either or both of these events - the T-shirts are always collectors items!
Kumu Hula, Pekelo Day, has offered to teach hula lessons to members and friends at our Keauhou Canoe Club halau, starting on Tuesday, May 3. Classes will be held each Tuesday, for about 60 minutes, starting at 5:15 p.m. and fees are a reasonable $40 per month. Call or e-mail Cherry Ward at 324-7272 or wardc008@hawaii.rr.com if you are interested, so she can give the Kumu Hula an approximate count of participants.
Again, Mahalo to all our members for your participation in making Keauhou such a vibrant asset to our community.
