Opening remarks and pule - Peter Lasich, President
Minutes: of January 13 and February 10 accepted as presented. MSP
Reports: Treasurer’s report – attached –
- Keauhou’s Kuuipo HIPA race raised almost $500, and was also a good funraiser.
- Next fundraiser will be to help with Lavaman Triathlon – April 1 & 2. IVF crews will be away, but mostly recreational paddlers help with this fundraiser. This usually brings in $1500.
Athletics:
- Two mens’ IVF crews leave for New Zealand on March 16, back March 27 through April 16.
- Jonathan reports the kids’ program needs coaches. High School paddling is pau and Konawaena, with Keauhou coaching did really well in the State Championships – 3rd place for mixed Varsity team. Marjorie Santos will be invited to bring the kids she coached last year to Keauhou. Transportation will be needed, and the Nazara family has offered the use of a small school bus from Eda Hinchcliff. Due to her school and teaching schedule, Sheryl Cobb will be unavailable till the end of May to coach the special events kids – Vonnie Maron has offered her assistance.
- Rena requests more single hull canoes be rigged for practice. Re-rig Konawaena and possibly Yasu’s Mirage Komohana. The two Force Vs are currently rigged double hull for practice for World Sprints. They can be separated to two more single hulls. One double hull needs to remain rigged for recreational paddling, as well as for funerals.
- If Keauhou has more crews qualifying for State Champs (with added kids’ crews) we would have to move from “Small Club” division to “Intermediate Club” size.
Operations:
- Possibly get another canoe dolly to facilitate launching canoes– white tubing protecting the canoe from the metal frame needs to be replaced – it slips off.
- Repair water line to hose bib by canoes so wheels can be rinsed after each use – will last longer.
- There will be a total of 95 OC-1 rack spaces when Bucky is finished with the newest rack. Old canoes and kayaks will be moved to the old wooden rack – possibly relocated on the beach behind the canoes
- Bucky has built a new changing room by the back corner of the halau.
MOH/HCRA:
- Fred reported that Keauhou’s canoes will be weighed on April 16, Easter Sunday, at 11 a.m.
- The Coaches and Officials Meeting will take place at Tex Drive-In, Honokaa on April 29.
- There will possibly be an additional assessment for paddlers insurance.
- A new wireless PA system will be put into use for MOKU races this season.
- Pending Homeland Security approval, Kawaihae CC will host its regattas at Kawaihae Harbor.
Old Business:
- E&O Insurance still needed – more research to be done.
- A survey will be available online this week for club members to give their opinions of how the club operates, coaching, etc.
New Business:
- Bylaws last updated in 1997, need revision. Bylaws committee consisting of Peter Lasich, Fred Giannini, Linda Greentree, Jane Bockus and Chris Uding to work on the updates. A General Membership Meeting would be needed to ratify any changes to the bylaws – it was suggested that we hold this meeting and a party on July 15 or 16, the weekend of the MOKU Championships (location still TBA).
- A new koa log needs to be found in order to build a channel crossing koa canoe. Approach DLNR and other sources.
- Na Wahi, a Hawaiian Immersion program, led by Jimmy Nani’ole would like to keep canoes in West Hawaii. KIC has approved their use of the park at Keauhou Bay, and Keauhou CC has offered space at our area, which is a safer location, and suggests he include the West Hawaii Hawaiian Immersion program as well.
Meeting adjourned 8:20 a.m. Next meeting on Friday, April 14, Teshima Restaurant at 6;30 a.m |
