Goals for Keauhou Canoe Club (KCC) for the 2007 Race Season

Regatta Season

Philosophy: KCC strives to maximize its success, and the success of its top crews, while being a club where all paddlers can compete at an appropriate level. Given the following rule changes by HCRA and Moku O Hawai'i, we recommend pursuit of the goals below.

[Rules Changes: addition of Womens 60+ event; addition of Men's 60+ event; addition of a fourth club size division (A = 6 or fewer events entered, AA = 7-12 events entered, AAA = 13-18 events entered, and AAAA = 19+ events entered); paddlers may race in two events if those events are both age group events at least 50+; only those crews finishing first or second in each division will qualify for States from Moku O Hawai'i this season. (Note also: there is now no 'watermark' system for open divisions, thus paddlers can paddle two open races of their choice at each regatta, making those divisions even more difficult to qualify.)]

Goals:

1. States – KCC will focus on taking at least the six fastest crews, which will include men, women and mixed crews.

[Implications: potential divisions must be identified well before the season starts, and set so as to be able to qualify from the very first regatta.]

2.MOKU Regattas – the club will make all reasonable efforts to ensure that any member who turns up at a regatta gets to race in at least one race.

[Implications: Divisions that are not States-oriented divisions will be used to make sure that everyone gets to race at least once. States-oriented divisions have to be decided upon before the start of the season so that those crews are set. This list may be amended as needed as the season progresses.]

3.Prepare the groundwork for crews for the IVF World Championships in Sacramento in 2008, especially the U19 Boys.

[Implications: Practices, crew selection/recruiting, and outbound messaging have to be pursued immediately.]

4.Craft a process for paddlers to challenge into a seat in any crew.

[Implications: Seats to be assigned on the ability to make a crew faster, especially in those divisions deemed to be “States” bound.]

Long Distance Season

Preamble: Given that the long distance season is the favored part of the racing season for a number of our paddlers, and is a draw to the club for paddlers who race with other clubs during the regatta season, we believe that there are opportunities to increase Club participation with the following goals.

Goals:

1.KCC will sponsor any and all crews with the desire and ability as determined by the Race Committee to compete in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai race or the Moloka'i Hoe.

[Implications: the club will provide financial help (matching funds, etc.), logistical help (canoe shipping, etc.), and coaching help to support such crews.]

2.KCC is an inclusive club and will accept outside paddlers, who become paid members of KCC, into our long distance crews.

[Implications: Crews that race together during the regatta season may not end up racing together during the long distance season.]

3.KCC will encourage paddlers interested in competing in the long distance season to train for long distance from the start of the regatta season, and provide opportunities for them so to do.

[Implications: the long distance training program must be designed before the start of the regatta season for those paddlers who want to compete effectively for seats in competitive long distance crews.]

External Races

Preamble: There are a number of prestigious off-island races where a competitive KCC crew could garner prestige for the club.

Goals:

1.KCC will support competitive crews racing in external races where they fit the previously stated goals.

[Implications: the club will provide financial help (matching funds, etc.), logistical help (canoe shipping, etc.), and coaching help to support such crews. An example of such a crew would be the mixed crew that won Catalina last year. An example of a crew that would likely not qualify would be the mixed crew attending the Rio race in Brazil.]
