IN ATTENDANCE: Fred Giannini, President,; Mark Wormley, Executive V.P.; Bill Armer, Athletic Director; Mary Brado, Treasurer; Sheryl Cobb—Recording Secretary; Paul Aguirre, Suzie Bistline, Carolyn Strawn-Parnell, Terry Trinidad, Jane Bockus, Jan War --Directors at Large;  Kalani Delovio, Michael Lee, Stephanie Amick, Ikaika Hauanio--Guests

CALL TO ORDER: 6:34am

MINUTES: Approved from Jan. 11, 2008.  Posted on website

REPORTS: Kalani Delovio—brought proposal for maintenance of canoes and implementation of cultural program.    Suggestion was to “hire” someone (perhaps Terry) for grant writing.  Cultural program would help show KIC our desire to remain in place. Halau structure “cultural halau” –authentic style and construction—to house logs, allow for cultural plans.  Kalani suggests we form a committee to research grants & cultural history.  Carbon fiber paddles must have bumper of some sort—rubber bumper is suggested—tape is not enough—strongly suggests wooden paddles.  Board unanimously approved to reimburse Kalani for his sanders that were stolen from the club halau area.

Michael Lee—would like to form cultural committee to share information, teach respect, perpetuate the cultural.  Would include racers & recreational paddlers—sharing info, knowledge, experience—culture and history.  Preserving, sharing/living the cultural/spiritual ideas of paddling with  feeling of aloha & ohana.  Kick off event would be first event—meet coaches, recruiting event.

Communications:  Virginia Isbell, representing Soroptomists asks to use halau & double hull on 5/18 (and offer a donation)—unanimously approved.

Treasurer:  Ikaika Hauanio of Merrill Lynch presented about re-investing funds locally—percentage to be invested long term.  Funds to be moved from Dain Rausher as soon as all signatures are received.

Mary presented monthly budget.  Large income from membership dues/boat rack fees.  Treasurer’s report approved.

Mary asks that we allow Ikaika to invest our income based on his knowledge and expertise.   Motion that Ikaika takes investment charge and create investment policy for board approval i.e. how much is easily accessible assets and where do we place our long term investments.  This motion was approved unanimously.

Membership:   239 paid membership (mostly recreational paddlers)--significant growth.  $14/person for insurance.  Implications--number of people vs. number of boats available.  Can be an issue during winter recreational paddling.  Perhaps purchase another canoe.

Boat rack fees not paid-spaces are ready to be reassigned.  New women’s coach will require OC-1 training so rack spaces will need to be available for those racers.

Athletics:  Race Committee Coaches nominations—Cheryl Villegas—women, novice, co-coach of youth, Paul Daugherty—men, co-coach of youth.  Cheryl wants to be involved in novice so that the foundation is set from the beginning.  Cheryl uses OC-1 as a training/evaluation tool.  Jan volunteers to help rehab coaches’ OC-1’s.  Club has 7 “coaches boats”.  Board approved coach nominations unanimously.

Race goals:  Change “seats” to “crews”

Regatta goals:  Coaches disliked the term “a seat” (shows ownership) and should be rephrased into crew (show teamwork).  Crews have input as well.

Long distance goals:  Board determined no waiting period for long-distance—otherwise, approved unanimously as written

Medals by Lane:  First lane choices at states provide the most medals.

2 women’s crews that qualified for IVF will probably come to Keauhou Canoe Club  with Cheryl.

It was unanimously voted that Jonathan be the IVF World Sprints Liasion for Keauhou crews.

Coaches want to do a steering clinic as a kick-off—Sat. March 15th  Welcome coaches—practices to start for novices/youth on 3/17.  Veterans start practice—March 31st—Ads on radio & in paper

Proposed Practice Schedule:

Women:  Mon. & Wed     Friday—OC1 practice

Men: Tues. & Thurs.        Monday—OC1 practice

Mixed Teams:  Wed. or Thurs. (alternating weeks)

April 13th canoe weighing (Sunday)  10:30 to 11—weighing—unrig before/re-rig after weighing.  Volunteers needed

Mark to serve as AD while Bill is in New Zealand.

Double hull will remain rigged for recreational paddlers until needed for club racing practice after March 15.

Feb. 16th—Law enforcement regatta—would like to use Hawaiian racers which means unrigging double hull next week.  Board thinks we should let them use other boat types (Mirage & Bradley)—Bill will contact Walter Ah Mow about this.

Paul Aguirre did huli demonstration, Kalani Delovio did steering clinic for recreational paddlers this past month.

Race Secretary:

Moku/HCRA:   Three issues needed to deal with for this year—Moku wants suggestions.  Number one at this point—length of regatta—too long, enforcement of huli time limits, shorten race day, cut-off times for last races.

Coaches & Officials Mtg. (Mandatory), Saturday, April 19th 8:30a.m. @ Tex’s Drive In

May 10th Kawaihae LD

May 24th Kai E Hitu LD/Regatta at KeauhouBay

Aug 2nd Keehi Lagoon—State Finals

Club must add rider to insurance to boat trailer for canoe transport—driver’s insurance is primary, HCRA insurance is secondary

Do we want to drop hull insurance on fiberglass canoes not transported often?  For further discussion after costs are investigated.

Operations:  Kalani would like to take responsibility for canoe maintenance—both koa & fiberglass.  Decision to be made when Shawn present.

Clean up day—went very well—halau grounds look great.

Garden signs—identify plants, etc. for educational/cultural purposes—approx. $400 cost.  Money came from halau budget.  Signs w/Keauhou CC logo are ordered.  Jennifer McDaniel is handling this project.

Re-pad seats on remainder of canoes when BIIF season is pau.

Old Business:

Scholarship fund is in progress

Highway litter pick-up –application is in to state.  More information as it comes.

New Business:

Kuuipo Race—March 22—Terry Trinidad—Race Director.  Suggestion to make it challenging—55+, novice, juniors option to do short course.  Courses run together.  9am start time.  Participation award to be given.   Courses to be deteremined once HIPA points implications researched. Jane says race historically has featured Novice paddlers – not too difficult short course

Founders Day regatta—July 5th –dropped our long distance races due to calendar conflicts!  Must invest time and effort in this event in order to make up for revenue loss of long distance races.  Possibly do a Honu Triathlon aid station on May 31st as a fundraiser—Jane to investigate.  Kalani willing to attempt to bring together club woodworkers to add as a fundraiser at Founder’s Day Regatta.
