Goals for Keauhou Canoe Club (KCC) for the 2008 Race Season

Keauhou Canoe Club Goals for 2008 Race Season

The mission of Keauhou Canoe Club is to perpetuate Hawaiian water sports including outrigger canoe racing, swimming, and surfing.  KCC strives to maximize its success, and the success of its top crews, while being a club where all paddlers can compete at an appropriate level.

KCC Regatta Goals

Reaching excellence requires a competitive attitude while maintaining an aloha spirit, respect, and unity within the Club. The MOKU 2008 rules changes mean that three MOKU crews will now qualify for States, although only the top crew has a chance at a good lane; and Senior men/women will only race at the MOKU and State Championships.  KCC took nine crews to the 2007 State Championships and finished in second place in the AA division (7-12 teams) by ten points.  In 2008 KCC wants to improve that performance by:

·         Focusing on taking all qualifying crews that want to go to states, including men, women, mixed, and junior crews.

·         Using a long-term strategy developed by the coaches to build the strongest crews to qualify into the best competitive lanes for their division from the beginning of the season.

·         Making all reasonable efforts to ensure that any member who has been assigned to a crew and given a report time can compete in at least one race.

·         Using a process for paddlers to challenge into any crew crafted under coaching guidelines that clearly states the tasks, procedures, timelines, and standards.

·         Supporting the novice programs with coaching, mentoring, and logistical help.

·         Recruiting, supporting, and retaining new paddlers with inclusive, supportive, and welcoming behaviors.

KCC Long Distance Goals

KCC reconfigures crews from the regatta season as the number of boats and available field of paddlers decreases, competition shifts to the international level, crew captains become more prominent, and more non-regatta and outside paddlers participate. In 2007 KCC took one 50+ women’s and one open men’s boat to the Moloka’i long distance championships.  At Queen Liliuokalani, KCC medaled with 6 of 9 boats in OC-6 events and 4 of 5 boats in OC-12 events. In 2008 we want to improve that performance by:

·         Encouraging paddlers interested in competing in the long distance season to train for long distance from the start of the regatta season and providing opportunities for them to do so.

·         Sponsoring and supporting any and all crews with the desire and ability to compete in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai or the Moloka’i Hoe with financial, logistical, and coaching help as determined by the coaches, athletic director, and Board.

·          Accepting outside paddlers, who become paid members of KCC, into our long distance crews using coaching guidelines that clearly state the tasks, procedures, timelines, and standards.  Existing KCC paddlers who are interested in participating in such crews need clear communication and fair opportunities to compete with “outside” paddlers.

KCC External Race Goals

KCC‘s off-island race goals are parallel to those for long distance.  KCC participated in no external races other than Moloka’i in 2007 and wants to improve that performance by:

·         Supporting with financial, logistical, and coaching help those competitive crews in prestigious, off-island races as determined by the coaches, athletic director, and Board.   An example is the IVF World Championships in Sacramento in 2008.
