Keauhou Canoe Club Raises Over $13K for American Cancer Society
KEAUHOU-KONA, HAWAI‘I ISLAND—Supporting and honoring paddlers who have faced the challenges of cancer, Keauhou Canoe Club (KCC) raised $13,279.04 for the American Cancer Society (ACS) at its recent Paddle Against Cancer.
Attended by nearly 100 KCC participants, the fundraiser included a five-mile recreational race, breakfast buffet prepared by club volunteers and a silent auction. In addition, there was recognition of club members who have been affected by cancer as patients, survivors and caretakers.
Club members who did not survive their battle were also recognized and remembered with stories of their fighting spirit and love for paddling. The fundraiser was KCC’s third Paddle Against Cancer.
“Keauhou Canoe Club is honored to support ACS with our third Paddle Against Cancer fundraiser,” states KCC president Bill Armer. "We are inspired by six of our own paddlers who served as honorary event “gladiators” with their own cancer battles. We are so happy and proud to almost double our contribution this year to help Hawai’i Island cancer patients."
According to ACS Director of Development Rebecca Vandaele of Kona, money raised will be earmarked to help Hawai‘i Island residents needing to travel to O‘ahu to receive treatment. ACS offers neighbor island patients free housing in a nurturing, homelike environment at Hope Lodge Hawai‘i, in addition to airfare and ground transportation. From 2019-2025, 17,198 nights of free lodging was provided to Hawai‘i Island patients and their caregivers.
